Kindergarten - Reading
The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts include Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.
The Reading Standards are broken into three sections: Literature, Informational Text, and Foundational Skills.

I. Print Concepts in Foundational Skills
b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by
specific sequences of letters.
c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
J. Phonological Awareness in Foundational Skills
b. Count, produce, blend, and segment syllables into spoken words.
c. Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable of spoken
words.
d. Isolate and produce the initial, medial vowel, and final sound in three
phoneme words.
e. Add or substitute individual sounds in simple, one syllable words to
make new words.
K. Phonics and Word Recognition in Foundational Skills
correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most
frequent sounds for each consonant.
b. Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings
(graphemes) for the five major vowels.
c. Read common high frequency words by sight.
d. Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of
the letters that differ.
L. Fluency in Foundational Skills

- retell familiar stories, including key details.
- identify characters, setting, and major events in a story.
B. Craft and Structure in Literature
- Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.
- Recognize common types of texts.
- With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of each in telling the story.
C. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas in Literature
With prompting and support:
- describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear.
- identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
- identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic.
D. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity
- Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
E. Key Ideas and Details in Informational Text
With prompting and support:
- ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
- identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
- describe the connections between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
F. Craft and Structure in Informational Text
With prompting and support:
- ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.
- identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book.
- name the author and illustrator of a text and define the role of each in presenting the ideas or information in a text.
